Characteristics of Human Resource Management (HRM)

It is a comprehensive function of management; Human resource management is concerned with managing people at work. It covers all types of people at all level’s in the organization, the human resource department has to manage all the employees from, customer care, sales and marketing, production, and the mangers themselves all who operate within the organization.

It is people oriented; Human resource management deals with people as individuals as well as groups. It is the function in management that sees the fit between individuals, jobs, organization’s and the environment.

It is individual oriented; In human resource management, every employee is considered as an individual so as to provide services and programmes to facilitate employee satisfaction and growth. Employees should be well versed with their individual roles in the company’s effort to achieve its strategic goals. As a way of tapping into the full potential of the staff, excellence is matched with rewards, while weakness is redressed through continuous training and on-the-job coaching.

It is development oriented; Human resource management is concerned with developing potential of employees so that they get the maximum satisfaction from their work and give their best efforts to the organization. Training and development should be well embedded in the organization strategic plans and policies, well trained employees derive full satisfaction from their jobs and give the best to the organization.

It is a passive function;Human resource management is not a human resources function or profession; it concerns every one in an organization. Scott et al say that, “HRM is a responsibility of all those who manage people as well as being a description of the work of those who are employed as specialists. It is that part of management which is concerned with people at work and with their relationships within an enterprise; HRM is therefore a staff function, but a line responsibility.

It is Continuous function; HRM is an ongoing or never ending exercise rather than a ‘one shot’ function. According to Terry,” it cannot be turned on and off like water from a faucet; it cannot be practiced only one hour each day or one day a week”. It requires a constant alertness and awareness of human relations and their importance in everyday operations
.
Future oriented; HRM is concerned with helping an organization achieve its future objectives by providing competent and well motivated employees. The human resource function is involved in manpower planning and the training needs of all employees to ensure continuity in maintenance of performing staff, bridging gaps brought about the ever changing business environment.

A challenging function: Managing human resources is a challenging job due to the dynamic nature of people. HRM call for considerations of people’s sentiments and emotions handling them tactfully. We can therefore conclude that HRM is administering a social system.

Science as well as an art; HRM is a science as it contains an organized body of knowledge consisting of techniques and principles. It is an art as it involves application of theoretical knowledge to the problems of human resources .handling people can be said to be one of the most creative arts.

Its Staff function; The function of HRM is advisory in nature. HR managers do not manufacture or sell goods but they contribute to success and growth of organizations by advising the operating departments on HR matters. HR department advices the Board of directors on policy issues concerning employees relations .

Young discipline; HRM is relatively a new specialized area as compared to manufacturing and marketing. It is still evolving and gaining recognition. Being a young discipline, the human resource department is also growing gradually at gaining recognition and importance from all other operating functions in organizations.

It is interdisciplinary: HRM involves application of knowledge drawn from several disciplines like sociology, anthropology, psychology and economics. To deal with human problems one must depend upon all these bodies of knowledge. The human resource practitioners have to understand the social status of all employees, read economic times, and understand human behavior bearing in mind they are dealing with
people of different orientations professionally, status and even religious backgrounds and culture.

Operates like a nervous system: HRM is similar to the nervous system in the human body. It is not an extraneous element to the organizational structure; rather it lies embedded in the structure. It is inherent in its functioning and an integral part of the process of management itself. The human resource function is the joining factor for all other departments. It acts as a bridge to join all other functions of management.
